Purpose: With the continuing emphasis on scientific progress and technological developments in today’s society, there is a constant demand for scientists and persons with scientific training in business, industry, government, and the healthcare professions. The Science major is designed for those who are preparing to transfer into a science or health care program at a four-year college or university.

Among the many baccalaureate degree programs available in this area are: Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Education, Pre-Chiropractic, Pre-Dentistry, Forestry, Geology, Home Economics, Mathematics, Pre-Medicine, Nursing Science, Health & Physical Education, Pre-Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physics, Pre-Veterinary Medicine

Admission Requirements: In addition to the admission requirements established for the college, entry into the Science program requires, as a minimum, satisfactory completion of the following high school units: 4 units of English, 3 units of college preparatory mathematics, 1 unit of laboratory science, and 1 unit of social science. Students with deficiencies will require Developmental Studies.

Program Requirements: Although the major emphasis in this curriculum is on mathematics, the biological sciences, and the physical sciences, the curriculum also includes courses in humanities and social sciences. Electives are provided so that the student can select the appropriate courses for his pre professional or scientific program as required in the first two years of a four-year college or university. Students are urged to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major department in the college or university to which transfer is contemplated and also to consult with the counseling office of the community college in planning their program and selecting electives. In order to prepare for junior class standing at a four-year college or university, the student usually must complete a program at the community college which is comparable in length and course content to the first two years of the program at the four-year institution. Upon satisfactory completion of the four-semester program, the graduate will be awarded the Associate of Science Degree with a major in Science.
